Duct vs. Ductless HVAC

Whether you’re installing an HVAC system for the first time or replacing the one you currently have, there are two basic choices: a system that requires ducts and a system that is ductless. Deciding which system is right for your home will depend on what you’re looking for in a heating and cooling system, your budget, and the set up of your home.

Duct Systems

An HVAC system that requires ducts will be made up of an indoor and outdoor component that connects the outdoor compressor to the interior rooms through a network of ducts in the walls, floors, and ceiling of your home. The ideal candidates of duct HVAC systems are ones that already have the ducts installed in their home as installing these requires a complete overhaul and costs a lot of money.

An air conditioning system that requires ducts would experience the air being cooled in the compressor, vented into the home through the ducts and then flow into any room that has open vents.

Ductless Systems

Ductless HVAC systems do not require ducts (as the name implies) and are the most popular choice, especially in old construction homes. Ductless HVAC systems can also be more energy efficient due to utilizing refrigerated lines to deliver air from the compressor into the rooms of the home. These refridgerated lines are easier to install and efficiently circulate heated or cooled air.
