With fall right around the corner, you’ll soon be making the switch from air conditioning to heating. After a long, hot summer, you might realize your furnace is no longer running as well as it was the previous year and that it’s making some odd noises. In this guide, you’ll learn more about these noises, what they actually mean, and how you can troubleshoot the issue.
Whistling Noises
If your furnace is making whistling noises, this is a sign that there are gaps in the ducts. Start by looking to see where exactly the whistling is coming from, paying special attention to the area where the duct and furnace blower meet. Whistling noises can also be caused by a clogged filter. If it’s the filter, simply replacing it should fix the issue.
Rattling and Vibration
If you notice your furnace making rattling or vibration noises, you will first want to check to make sure all of the screws that attach the ducts are all secure. If there are screws that are not secure, simply tightening them should stop the rattling and vibration noises. If this doesn’t fix the noises, you can also duct tape lose ducts and any other objects hanging from your furnace, as well as place a cork pad under the furnace.
Motor Noises
If the noise your furnace is making seems to be coming from the motor, it’s best to call in a professional HVAC technician to take a look at what’s going on. Sometimes the solution to the noise is as simple as placing some styrofoam around the motor and other times the motor’s bearings need to be replaced.
Banging Noises
If your furnace makes banging noises when it’s turned on, it’s most likely one of two problems. The first issue could be part of the duct has “oil-canned” and needs additional support in order to function properly and the second issue could be ignition roll out. While oil-canning ducts are easy to repair and replace, ignition roll out is a little bit more serious. If you notice the ignition flame is too large when flipping out, contact your HVAC technician as soon as possible.
