In today’s day and age, most of us are fortunate to have air conditioning when we want it but believe it or not, air conditioning probably has not been around as long as you may imagine it has been around for. We love having air conditioning handy in the Summertime and with Summer just months away, here are some fun facts for you air conditioning lovers to hear!
1. The Invention of Air Conditioning was Unconventional
Credited with being invented in 1902, the idea of air conditioning came about in a fascinating fashion. While we associate air conditioning with comfort these days, a man named Willis Carrier put together a system to help cool down his printer. At the time, little did he and everyone know that his innovation would become a world wide phenomenon! If you recognize his last name Carrier, it is probably because many of the premier air conditioning systems are named after him!
2. Lack of Air Conditioning Played a Part in Less School
When we were all kids, we wanted as less amount of school as possible. Well before the 1900s when air conditioning did not exist and it was too hot to be in school, kids were sent home early or there was no school at all. How about that! Some even believe that the lack of air conditioning played a part in the structure of no school in the Summertime to begin with! I guess we can all thank air conditioning for our summer vacations as a kid!
3. Air Conditioning Made Its Way to the White House circa 1930
While air conditioning was invented in the early 1900s, the first air conditioning system was not installed until 1930. Herbert Hoover was the first president to request and enjoy the comforts of air conditioning in the white house.
4. Movie Theaters Were The First To Invest Large Sums of Money Into Air Conditioning
Once air conditioning systems became an official invention, movie theaters were quick to install them into their facilities, especially in the summer months. This paid off big time for movie theaters and before they knew it, they would see large flock of crowds. This was due to the fact many homes still did not have air conditioning as air conditioning was nowhere near as popular then as it is now.
5. America as a whole spends over a Billion dollars a year on Air Conditioning
By this point, this should hardly come as a surprise but America as a country spends over 1 billion dollars annually on air conditioning. It is estimated that 80 percent of homes in America use air conditioning yearly.
