Ductless Mini Splits 101

ductless air conditionerSo, you’re thinking about a new way to heat and cool your home without having to install ductwork in your home and you’re considering a ductless mini-split. But what exactly is a ductless mini split and how does it work?

What is a Ductless Mini Split System?

A ductless mini split is a way to heat and cool your home, sans duct system. Similar to central air conditioners, ductless mini splits have two main components: an outdoor condenser/compressor and an interior unit. A conduit will link both the interior and exterior units.

Ductless mini split systems are ideal for homes that are older and don’t have ductwork installed or don’t have space or ductwork to be installed but still need the modern conveniences of central air.

Which Types of Systems Can I Choose From?

All ductless mini split systems work essentially the same, although there are three different systems you can choose from.

Single-Zone Mini Split System

A single-zone mini split system is ideal for installing heating and cooling systems into individual rooms. These are good to install in a main area of your home to supplement your current cooling system.

Multi-Zone Mini Split System

Multi-zone mini split systems are ideal for small to medium size houses. They involve multiple units that you can place in individual rooms of your home and can be separated into zones. The only downside to this different type of mini split system is that you cannot have more than eight zones.

Whole-House Mini Split System

Whole-house mini split systems are very similar to multi-zone min split systems, although they are ideal for larger homes. With this system, you are able to heat and cool eight separate rooms and if you require additional rooms to be heated/cooled, you can install a single-zone mini split or multi-zone mini split to supplement the whole-house system.

What Benefits Do Ductless Mini Split Systems Provide?

Although ductless mini splits have the same benefits of other HVAC systems, they do provide additional key benefits that set them apart from other options.

Energy Efficient

Ductless mini splits meet both United States federal government and ENERGY STAR guidelines, making them the most energy efficient option for heating and cooling your home. With a ductless mini split system, you won’t only just save money but will also reduce your carbon footprint.

Clean Air

The filter capacity of a ductless mini split is much larger than that of central air conditioning. They utilize a multi-filter system, drastically reducing the dust, dirt, and allergens that get filter throughout the air in your home.
