Our Most Frequently Asked Air Conditioning Questions

hvac technicianOur team at Unique Indoor Comfort has been serving residents throughout the Billerica and Boston areas for over 15-years and has answered countless questions regarding HVAC systems over the years. A handful of these questions we’re asked, we hear time and time again and are compiling them in one spot to help save you time, money, and frustration!

Is it necessary to replace the air filter in my air conditioning system?

Yes! Regularly changing your air filter (think every three months!) is crucial to help to improve the indoor air quality in your home, as well as keeping your system running efficiently. If your filter gets clogged, it will push dirt, dust, and other allergens into your home and will cause your system to work harder than it needs to. Not changing your air filter will cause your cooling costs to increase and can even damage your unit, requiring costly repairs.

How often should I be scheduling a maintenance appointment?

We recommend scheduling at least one maintenance appointment per year and recommend scheduling this appointment in the spring before it gets hot out. This allows our team to fully inspect your air conditioning system, perform routine maintenance, and make any repairs before you start running your system on a regular basis.

Should I set my thermostat to ‘on’ or ‘auto’?

There are various ways to customize the airflow in your home through your thermostat and one of the most common questions we get when doing routine maintenance is ‘should I use the on or auto setting on my thermostat?’. By setting your thermostat to ‘auto’, the fan in your air conditioning system will only run during the cooling cycles you have your thermostat set to. Once your home reaches the desired temperature, the system will shut off until the next cycle.

By having your system set to ‘on’, it will run consistently throughout the day, regardless of the temperature in your home.

Should I use the fan in my air conditioning system, or my ceiling fan?

We recommend setting your thermostat to ‘auto’ so the fan in your system only runs when the system is running to reach your ieal temperature, and using your ceiling fan to disperse the cool air throughout your home.

What is a SEER rating?

Standing for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, a SEER rating represents the efficiency of your air conditioning system. It is determined by the cooling output and power consumption of your system. High-efficiency systems have a SEER rating of 14 or higher.

How long does the average air conditioning system last?

The average air conditioning system has an expected lifespan of 12-15 years, but with regular maintenance and ensuring quick repair of any issues, your system can run an average of 20 years, sometimes even more!
